Words Per Minute: How Fast Do People Really Read?
When TextLoom shows an "estimated reading time" next to your word count, it's using a specific number: 238 words per minute (WPM). But where does that figure come from, and is it accurate? How fast do people actually read, and how does reading speed vary across different ages, skill levels, and content types?
This guide covers the research behind reading speed estimates — so you can calibrate reading time predictions intelligently and set realistic expectations for your readers.
The Research: Average Adult Reading Speed
The most-cited recent study on adult reading speed is Brysbaert (2019), published in the Journal of Cognition, which analyzed data from 190 studies covering nearly 18,000 participants. The key finding:
- Average adult silent reading speed: 238 words per minute (for English-language text)
- Reading speed in other languages ranged from 158 WPM (Hebrew) to 297 WPM (Finnish)
- Reading aloud is significantly slower: approximately 183 WPM average
Earlier research, often cited online, placed the average at 200–250 WPM. The Brysbaert (2019) figure of 238 is one of the most rigorous modern estimates and is the basis for TextLoom's reading time calculation.

Reading speed increases steadily through childhood as decoding becomes automatic, plateaus in early adulthood, and tends to slow somewhat in older age (though comprehension often improves with experience).
What About Speed Readers?
Speed reading courses and apps often claim reading speeds of 1,000–2,000 WPM. Research is skeptical. A 2016 Psychological Science in the Public Interest review concluded that there is a fundamental tradeoff between reading speed and comprehension — at speeds much above 400–500 WPM, comprehension begins to deteriorate significantly for most readers.
Genuinely high reading speeds (400–700 WPM) are achievable with practice and correlate with strong vocabulary and prior knowledge of the subject matter — which allows the reader to "skip" less familiar territory more confidently. Claims of 1,000+ WPM with full comprehension are not supported by published research.
How Content Type Affects Reading Speed
Reading speed is not constant across all types of text. Several factors slow or accelerate reading pace:
- Complexity and vocabulary: Dense academic prose, legal text, or technical documentation slows reading to 100–150 WPM for many readers.
- Familiarity with the subject: Experts read faster in their domain because they recognize concepts and can skim confirmatory information.
- Purpose: Skimming (looking for a specific piece of information) is faster than careful reading for full comprehension. Proofreading is slower than both.
- Medium: Some research suggests reading on screens is 20–30% slower than reading on paper, though newer studies with modern, high-resolution screens find smaller differences.
- Line length and typography: Optimal line length is 50–75 characters per line. Very wide or very narrow columns slow reading.
Reading Time and Content Strategy
Reading time estimates matter for content strategy. Research on content engagement patterns suggests:
- Blog posts under 3 minutes (under ~700 words): High completion rates but limited ability to establish authority or cover a topic thoroughly.
- Blog posts 5–7 minutes (~1,200–1,700 words): The "sweet spot" cited in much content marketing research for balancing depth with completion.
- Long-form articles over 10 minutes (2,400+ words): Lower average completion but higher average time on page — readers who stay tend to be highly engaged and share more.
- News articles (2–4 minutes): Shorter formats align with scanning behaviour and the inverted pyramid structure.
For SEO, longer content tends to rank better for competitive informational queries — not because Google rewards word count directly, but because comprehensive content naturally earns more links, covers more related keywords, and satisfies user intent more fully.
