Words Per Page — Reference Chart
The table below shows approximate words per page for the most common academic formatting combinations:
| Font Size | Single | 1.5 Space | Double |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10pt | 700 | 460 | 350 |
| 11pt | 600 | 420 | 320 |
| 12pt (standard) | 500 | 370 | 250 |
| 13pt | 450 | 330 | 230 |
| 14pt | 390 | 290 | 200 |
Estimates assume standard 1-inch margins, standard font (Times New Roman / Calibri), full paragraphs. Poetry, code blocks, and heavy formatting will produce different results.
Why Page Count and Word Count Differ
The number of words per page depends on three main variables: font size, line spacing, and margin size. A 1,000-word essay at 12pt double-spaced fills approximately 4 pages. The same essay at 12pt single-spaced fills only 2 pages. Font choice matters too — wider fonts like Arial fit fewer words per line than narrower fonts like Times New Roman.
When a professor or employer specifies a page limit, they almost always mean 12pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins — unless stated otherwise. When in doubt, ask.
